Flower Skull

Tattooist and painter, Emma Sailor, is our contributing artist today with this lovely flower skull.  Perhaps this is her reminder to all of us of how delicate our skulls really are.  The soft shades of color and textures could resemble the many emotions we endure in our lives that always wind up painted across our faces.  Or, it could just be one colorfully kick ass skull.  It's all about perception.  Thanks for sharing you work with us, Emma!  

Chalk Skull

Diego Seconetti drew this skull. Since there was no info included about this drawing, by my analysis, it's white chalk on black paper. There is a lightness to this drawing, because chalk has a sheerness that can be built up. I like that this drawing is the reverse of the normal black on white drawings. The whiteness of the chalk plays with the highlights and the shadows. This makes me want to experiment with dark paper and light mediums.

Bob the Deceased Builder Bag

Dawn "had fun giving new life to an old bag and Bob the Builder got a cool skull makeover." "Bob the Builder" has been airing for over 10 years, and perhaps it's time for a new look. I wonder what Bob the Deceased Builder would be using his equipment for? Perhaps up-keeping cemeteries, constructing mausoleums, and visiting ship graveyards, hoping to get a pirate ship up and sailing again. I think we need a new spooky kids show like this. Skull of Skulls

Today's "Skull of Skulls" is from Mark Taylor of Luton, UK.

Illustrated Skulls

Dave the Chimp from Europe sent us a couple of skull items he has completed.  He said: "The first are skulls drawn with my left hand while recovering from a dislocated right shoulder (skateboarding injury! yay!) and the second piece is a skull made from ghosts, my take on the Damien Hirst 'For TheLove Of God' ".

Face Off: Skull-A-Day Co-editors' Skull

Since the Skull Appreciation Day 2013 Face Off show opens tomorrow, we're giving you a sneak peek at the skull we created for the show. This skull was created by Abby "Azurafae" Davis (top left), Justin "Tatman" Lovorn (top right), and Noah Scalin (bottom). Noah digitally matched up the sections to create the final piece.

My skull quarter was inspired by the decay of nature. I used some of the plentiful fallen azalea flower from my neighbors (per their permission), bare ground of my garden, and unused play sand. There might be an inchworm hiding among the flowers. I used sand buckets to collect the flowers, and a sand shovel to arrange the sand.

Justin explained that his skull is "my simple tribute to Slayer guitarist Jeff Hanneman who just passed away. My love of skulls goes hand in hand with my love of metal and I wanted to remember him in the most appropriate way I could think of."

Noah revisited his ornamental skull from year one. He rearranged the ornamental pieces, to fit the skull template, so his half would line up with our quarters.

Want to see some more Face Off skulls in portion (and meet Noah, Justin, and me), head to the International Museum of Surgical Sciences in Chicago, IL for the opening on Friday, May 31, 2013 from 5pm-9pm. Lego Skull

I'm not sure whether to thank Craig Horky for this sweet ass Lego skull, or the friend who suggested that he submit it. It's reminiscent of another Lego Skull that we've seen here before

This somewhat random assortment of parts seem reflective of our own DNA being the building blocks for our physical structure.  The smaller parts make the whole; which is why it's important to not forget them.  Thanks to you and your friend for the flashback, Craig!

Rebel Lady Skulls

Today's bit of "nautical noir" is from the Rebel Lady .  A coupe of drawings for your viewing pleasure.

These make me think of some old school tattoo flash.  I could easily see the skeleton sailors emblazoned across the chest of an old salt who's spent more days at sea than on shore.  Thanks for sharing these, Rebel Lady!

Numeriser Skulls

Jules Andrault is in here today to share this collection of skulls from graphic school.

Shades of grey provide a great graphite representation of some darker skulls.  Without the dark there is no light.  Don't be scared of those darker images, be thankful that they remind us to revisit the brighter things in life.   Keep up the great work, Jules!

Skull with a Mustache

David Woodward of Toronto explained this is "my own drawing traced onto mylar for a moustache-themed show". It's been backlit.

Mustaches have been a hot trend for the past few years. Before that, it was rare to see a guy sporting only a mustache. I'm used to guys that have a beard to accompany that 'stache. I love seeing David's creative version of this trend. Archaeologically speaking, there have been ancient corpses found that still have hair. Do you all know of any that still had a mustache? Comment below if you do.

Anatomical Skull Drawing

Manar from Lebanon, "drew this a while back for my sister's art project".

I always admire the anatomical skull artwork that comes into our submissions box. This one is particularly eye catching, because it's very well done. Manar is a very nice sister to do this for her sister. I hope the rest of the art project was as amazing as this is!

Terrifying Skulls

Clay Kasserman created two mixed media skulls. He explained, "They start as pen and ink drawings that I scan and then finish with Photoshop."

These remind me of horror movies I should have watched before bed. You know the kind with melting faces and dead people becoming alive again. I feel like these could eat my brains in one chomp...or just give me nightmares for weeks.
