Core of the Yoga Sutras - Book Review

B.K.S. Iyengar's Core of the Yoga Sutras: The Definitive Guide to the Philosophy of Yoga is actually a pretty short book at less than 200 pages of actual reading material. Much of the bulk is comprised of a handy dandy Glossary and Appendix. There's also a foreward, preface, and prologue before the introduction. I thoroughly appreciate all the organization that went into this thing. Plus it's pretty in pink and orange. I'm only a little sorry for saying that - because it's true.

This book is meant for everyone. Including newbies and people that have never done any study of yoga.

Iyengar's 80+ years of yoga experience prove helpful to the rest of us in learning what the sutras are saying - providing a more modern accessible explanation. It even has a few charts and tables throughout for the more visual learners.

Don't let the small amount of God-talk in the preface fool you. This book is not a religious text. It took me forever to read because I'm terrible about reading philosophy or anything that isn't chick-lit really. Don't let my reading-flaws color your perception of this book.

I think most yogis that are just barely getting started should probably not read this book just yet. They'll likely get bogged down by the amount of sanskrit tossed about. Flipping back to the glossary every few sentences can make it feel like a more difficult read than it really is; but the glossary is a huge help. Yogis that are starting to get serious about the practice (beyond asana practice) should totally buy this book. Sit down with your tea, keep one finger on the glossary - and get ready to do some learning. Smart teachers will add this to their library.

Especially for being well-organized - I certainly recommend this book.

Books for New Yogis

October's almost over which means the weather is perfect for settling in with a blanket, a hot chocolate, someone to snuggle with, and a great book. That book can totally further your yoga education if you pick one of my top 10 beginner-friendly books. Listed in no particular order.

There are a lot of great books that are considered yogi must-reads that didn't make this list because of their ability to overwhelm newcomers. Leave your suggestions in the comments.

Must Read Yoga Books

I've finally started settling into my new schedule with yoga and cooking and eating and going to the gym and all that. I'm getting comfortable in it, so instead of feeling rushed I feel quiet. Downtime has almost magically presented itself to me and I'm spending more time sitting around looking at the grass, watching TV online, and generally wanting to read books.

I'm not much of a reader, but I've been craving books lately. Since I don't usually read - I don't keep a lot of books around (that are mine - adam collects them) so I had to order some books last week. They finally arrived and I'm psyched. Can't wait to dig in and spend some lazy afternoons soaking them in.

The Sun is Always Shining

"...one of the simplest yet most beautiful teachings of tantra, of yoga and of my own teacher John Friend is that the sun is always shining, even when it's night, even when there's a storm, even when you can't see it. The light is always present: even when we are having a bad day, when we wake up tired, when we are in a bad mood, when we feel lost, scared, angry. The sun is always shining. The light is always radiant."

How to Be Perfect

Act in accordance with your right path and leave the rest to god.

You cannot control everything; no matter how hard you try. Sometimes your best efforts may fall on deaf ears, closed eyes, and hard hearts. Nonetheless, you must act. Do what your heart knows to be the right thing. Then you know that you have done your part... your duty. It is not your responsibility to ensure that the world is peaceful and fair. It is your duty to make certain that what you put out into the world is the best you know to give. Your best is always perfection.

Reflecting on Reflection

As the week goes by I've been going over my notes from the Noah Maze workshop and trying to gently unpack the lessons and tips I received and find them a home in my regular practice. A lot of what was covered were the themes of love, commitment, and reflection. The notes on love and commitment come very readily to me... I just 'get' those... but the reflection stuff is apparently a little harder. Amusing that I have to consciously sit and reflect on these things... to really gather and soak in the lessons on reflection. I have always been a rather internal person, but actual reflection... maybe I've shied away from that recently because it's taking some real work. I'll have to settle in a bit more and look inside for that.

Here's something from my notes that we can all afford to consider a little more deeply today:

The Universe went through an extraordinary amount of effort to make you. Be Grateful.

John Friend Interview via Bay Shakti Part 2 (Video)

As promised, here is Part 2 of the Bay Shakti interview with John Friend as he kicks off his 2011 Dancing with the Divine Tour. This interview features an interesting discussion on Anusara's Shiva-Shakti Tantra philosophy and whether it's supposed to be dogmatic.

Spoiler: *Anusara supports thinking for yourself.*

Creatures of Infinite Possibility

"I love that we are creatures of infinite possibility. I hope that we are living well, living for each other, doing good and going slow." - MamaKs (via Etsy Featured Seller Interview)

I really like this quote. I think I'm going to adopt this one for myself for the coming year. Maybe I'll write it down and stick it on my vision board.
