Sunday Simulacra - Version 7.12

Today's simulacra come from the great outdoors....

The first is a great looking calf with a scowling skull pattern on it's face from Susan Scofield of York, PA.  The second is a juicy Black Krim tomato, reminiscent of "Ricardio", from the garden of Thea Brown.  Thanks for sharing these, Susan and Thea!

Sunday Simulacra - Version 7.11

This week's simulacrum are a combination of some real hard heads...

David Blohm of Adrian, MI found this one on a flower pot at his favorite Mexican restaurant.  

Job has this long faced skull coming out of his bathroom floor.

Justyna Walewicz caught this possibly yawning stone face skull. I guess you're get tired of just sitting there all day, too.

Swirly Skull Tote Bag

Wayne Chisnall, of London, England, created this Swirly Skull tote bag. Per a request, he had a series of these printed, as an affordable alternative to normal paper prints. If you are interested in purchasing one, you can find more info about them here. I love the concept printing artwork on an alternative media. Through various artists I've talked to, their artwork sells better when it's not a traditional print. When it's tactile and usable, it's more likely to be purchased than something that will hang on a wall. Just a thought for you other artists looking to branch out from traditional prints. Sunday Simulacra - Version 7.10

Today's batch of simulacra are a mechanical bunch.  Each serving it's own unique purpose...

Scott Patrick McBride was at Johnny Brenda's in Fishtown (Philadelphia) watching The Veils.  When the show was over he and a friend went to the first floor bar and happened to sit across from this juicer press. The skull of "Jucifer".

DJ Carlito found this mixer skull.  "Kinda like seeing the image of Jesus in an omelette, but it's there only if you look at it (or point your camera) in the right angle."

Al Frank from Austin, TX found this smiley skull on the inside of the battery space on a Coleman electric lantern.




These mechanical marvels were designed by someone.  Someone who, I wonder, might be a secret skull fan working their subject into their design.  Or maybe it's just coincidence.  Either way we want to thank Scott, DJ, and Al for sharing their finds.  If you happen to find one of your own then be sure to submit it for the rest of the skull loving world to see.

Sunday Simulacra - Version 7.9

This week's simulacra were found on the ground.

Danette Pratt works with Marie Graham at Ohio University. Danette explained that "Marie routinely walks her creek beds and washes on her property here in southeastern Ohio. Then she brings her finds into the office to show and tell...usually flint arrow heads and spear points, interesting rocks and tumbled glass pieces." In June Marie brought in this "pebble skull", and granted Danette permission to photograph it and submit it us.

Tamela Nagy found this skull shell on Grandview Beach, in Carlsbad, CA.

Denis Fontaine received this skull rock from a friend. They found it in their yard.

Today's skulls were found while looking up.

Randy Latini from Somerdale, NJ found this skull formed from tree leaves and the sky. I included both versions, so you can see the full skull effect of the leaves against the sky.

Vitor Costa of Hallandale, FL said "This Photo was taken inside of a church during a trip to Brussels, Belgium at 6:45PM , March, 07 2011. Me and a couple of friends had been walking all day and just wondered in to take a look, I did not get the name of the church, and just realized that the organ looked like a skull after I got back from the trip."

Sunday Simulacra - Version 7.7

These skulls were formed from bubbles.

Amy Dietz of Richmond, Virginia, explained, "The foam from my beer formed this skull! I had to quickly take the picture before it dissolved away. It only lasted about 15-20 seconds. Pure luck!"

In April, Giuseppe Zappalà of Torino, Italy, "found this bubble skull in a bottle with photographic development chemical" he uses! 

David Naugle found this skull in ocean foam. He took this Vine video of the skull and it blowing away.

Today's simulacra are happy little accidents.

First up is a past contributor Ryan Kinney of HEYMAN! Productions in Ashtabula, OH who told us: "I found this skull on the back of a ruined photo. While cleaning out a friends barn, I discovered a pile of old, wet, moldy photos. All the ink had ran on them and I found this guy on the back of a photo where the ink had transferred from another photo in the stack."

Next up is Jim in Indiana who wrote: "Obviously a lethal strain of bird droppings."

Anonymous told us: "I noticed this by accident and felt it was 'a must.' It is embedded in concrete at the building where I work- been walking past it every day for nearly ten years!  However because of the nature of my work I can not identify either myself or the place any further."

Derailed Cherry #17  from Deadly Rival Roller Derby told us: " I found this rock at the Dunedin Causeway, in St. Petersburg, Fl when my son was down visiting me."

Mariana Sanchez found this old cufflink of a horse head(upside down). Maybe this aggressive looking skull is ahead of it's time, but not for us...

...and Laurie Kahn spotted this cool headed air conditioner unit at a food manufacturing plant in Chatsworth, Ca.

Food is definitely one of the most popular places that our readers find those sneaky little skulls hidden around us daily. These two are no exception...

Dawn Doty writes, "My kids are huge fans, so my daughter was thrilled when she spotted this skull while we were rolling out sugar cookies"....

...and Sarja Hasan found this tasty morsel of a skull in some soup.

We've got 2 HOT simulacra today that could burn you up, 1 externally and 1 internally.

My bro, Matt Kaufmann, up in Elk Rapids, MI was having a good old barrel fire and took a picture of the flames. Later when he checked the photos he found this (look towards the center, just above the board)...

Sunday Simulacra: Version 6.45

Last week, I went to Grand Caverns in Grottoes, VA. It's an amazing cavern and unlike others I've seen. I took a lot of photos, because I love natural wonders. While looking through the photos on my computer, I noticed these 3 skulls.

This is looking from a dark section, through an opening, into a light section.

This one was hiding in one of the few reflecting pools

Again, looking from a dark area, to a light one. This skull is on a large calcium deposit column.

I found these three skulls there, but there could be more lurking. It's a very beautiful and mysterious place full of shadowy areas. Without the artificial lights, it's pitch black. Touring a cavern in always an amazing experience. If you haven't toured on, check out your local areas for public ones.
